Savory Oats
Your daily Oatmeal – just better!
If you are like me, you have wondered if there was a healthy, tasty, non-sweet way to make breakfast with oats. You have also then tried complicated Oats upma or other savory oats recipes and felt it wasn’t something you could make and eat every morning.
I have an answer for you. This simple recipe is the tastiest oats preparation you will ever try – almost addictive, ask me! It is reminiscent of the flavor of sabudana khichadi, but without the guilt associated with it 🙂 Its a great quick breakfast fix, when you crave something salty for breakfast (like a true Indian). I often eat this as a light evening meal with veggies (carrots, peas, sweet potato and beets taste good)
all you need: serves 1 person
1/2 cup traditional oats (not the instant ones)
3/4 cup water
1/2-1 tsp ghee
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
half a pinch of asafetida (optional)
1 green chilli cut in small pieces
cilantro
salt and sugar
Procedure:
- Heat the ghee in a saucepan, add cumin seeds to the hot ghee, they should sizzle
- add the green chillies
- Add the oats to this and toast it till you smell golden deliciousness 😛
- add the water, salt and sugar, cook till the oats are fully cooked. reduce or add more water to get your desired consistency. I like it on the drier side.
- Garnish with cilantro and serve with a side of greek yogurt
